February 19th

7:00 a.m., waking up to the sounds of worship on the rooftop - what a wonderful way to begin the day! The street boys here love to play guitar and sing, and do it every chance they get (after doing their chores!). We have met Pastor Shem and his wife Sumi, the assistant pastor Raju and his wife Bawani (not sure if that's how you spell it), youth leaders Muna and Bikas - all very welcoming and friendly people who have taken us in and made us feel at home. Many speak English but also try to teach us Nepali. Slowly we are learning their names and language. Yesterday and today we went shopping for (you guessed it!) rice and dahl (lentils) and different spices. But the cooking smells and tastes so good! That is, when the electricity is on and you can see. We also got some candles so that we can see the way to our rooms. Might as well go to bed early as the evenings can be cold with no heat (you can even see your breath!) But for a few hours in the early afternoon, it is like a very warm summer day and we are shedding our sweaters. When you go shopping, the cars and motorcycles whiz by you, honking and beeping to warm others they're coming, as you won't find any stop signs, street lights or even clearly marked lanes. In fact, the whole way here from the airport, we didn't stop once. You just keep going and everyone (people, animals) just move out of the way as you go honking past. So far we have gone out and returned home unscathed! And now begins our 'blending in' ...

Sounds like it was when I was there, actually. The car horns were the funniest part, always blasting away. They told me if you got into an accident and it was proved you didn't blow the horn at the time, you were in even BIGGER trouble. Have fun blending in, guys! Be blessed!!

I'm so glad you arrived safely. And to have a real apartment instead of a single large room as you expected is awesome! Did they build that just because you were coming?

Worship on the rooftop? What a cool way to wake up--IF you're ready to wake up. If you wanted to sleep a bit longer I'm thinking it could be annoying.

What an adventure you are on! Thank you so much for keeping us all up-dated. I hope you're able to continue doing this frequently.

I think I'd be scared about being in a car in Nepal. Maybe I should rethink my idea of going one day.

"Blending in"? Sure, like a group of flamingos in a penguin colony! But wow, enjoy your ultimate camping trip. Too bad someone (oh, like me) isn't there to capture it all on video. But thankyou for taking pictures and posting them on the blog.

The Lord uses his servants like a carpenter uses his tools; the favorite ones get smacked and scuffed up a lot. But when their careers are finished, look at all they've done! (Whereas the safe ones look shiny and perfect...and haven't done a ruddy thing.)

So be effective! But I pray you'll be safe too. Maybe rub some shoe polish on your face, or wash Sherri's hair with it. (Half the people in Katmandu will recognize her by June, not to mention ALL of the boys.)

This is signed "anonymous," but c'mon, you know who it is (hint: three dogs, 7-Eleven, flags ... getting warmer?)
